Kingfisher Bay Resort sits on K’gari, the largest sand island in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage listed one at that. The eco-accredited resort is built low into that landscape rather than over it, so guests arrive by ferry, the rainforest begins where the buildings stop, and the evening light comes off the west-coast water. Couples can marry on Sunset Beach, the waterfront ceremony setting on the resort’s western shore, or in the Secret Garden, a landscaped and more sheltered location within the grounds.
Guest capacities are not published, so the right space and the right numbers are worked out with the resort’s coordinator at the enquiry stage. Receptions carry the most range on the Fraser Coast property: the Ballroom is the largest formal room, while the Stirling and Wongari Decks are timber spaces open to the island’s native surrounds for something more relaxed, and poolside and beachside settings are available as well. Ceremony and reception sites all sit within the resort grounds, so guests stay in one place across the day.
Catering is in-house through the resort restaurants and stretches from cocktail celebrations and outdoor barbecues to plated formal dining. An on-island wedding coordinator is included in every package, and ceremony set-up scales with the tier chosen, with the premium package covering 30 chairs, a signing table with two chairs and an iced water station. Packages also bundle three nights’ accommodation for two, return passenger ferry travel, daily buffet breakfast, the celebrant and wedding car transfers, which removes most of the logistics an island wedding usually creates. The combination of a World Heritage setting, beach and rainforest ceremony sites and packages that cover the travel makes Kingfisher Bay Resort an outstanding island wedding venue.
