Whistle Post Estate is a family-owned vineyard on the outskirts of Penola, in the heart of the Coonawarra wine region. A sweeping driveway opens onto the vineyard lawn, and the property offers venue hire across the lawn, the cellar door and the Barrel Hall, with the surrounding vines available for photographs.
The Barrel Hall is the newest addition and the largest space, seating up to 160 guests among the wine barrels and configurable for either a cocktail or a sit-down ceremony and reception. The cellar door is bright and modern with large windows over the vines, opening onto outdoor decking and the lawn, which makes it a natural spot for arrival drinks and canapés. The vineyard lawn itself is flat and shaded by large native trees and a golden elm, suiting both a ceremony and a cocktail hour with lawn games.
Catering is open rather than in-house: couples can bring any licensed and insured professional caterer, and the estate keeps a recommended list of firms it works with. Penola town centre is a two-minute drive away, so guest accommodation is close at hand. The estate is deliberately flexible about how the day is run. Amazing winery! We are visiting from Adelaide and stopped in and were welcomed by the cutest pup and the young gentleman who assisted us (unfortunately didn’t get a name) was fantastic, very kind and knowledgeable! Already can’t wait to visit again 🥰
