A 40-acre Adelaide Hills property built around an 1850s cinder-block Long Barn, offered as dry hire for the whole weekend with the Stables for indoor ceremonies.
The Brae sits on 40 acres at Dawesley in the Adelaide Hills, and the history is unusually specific. The site began as a copper smelter, taking its name from a Mr Scott who settled along the creek in 1847. When the township of Dawesley was established in 1857, the Long Barn served as storage for the local wood that fired the smelters, and it was built from the cheapest material to hand: cinder blocks made from the by-product of copper smelting. After the smelters were decommissioned the property became an award-winning Merino stud, and the shearing station and sheep doors are still visible on the western wall.
Since Australia Day weekend 2019 it has been home to Maddie and Milos, who live on the property with their children, a white fluffy dog, a handful of hand-reared pet sheep and two alpacas. The acreage hosts both the ceremony and the reception in one place. Outdoor ceremonies use the gumtrees or the Hawthorn Tree as a backdrop depending on the season; for an intimate ceremony out of the weather, The Stables is the indoor option.
The Brae is deliberately a DIY venue. Rather than fixed packages it charges a flat venue hire fee, and couples generally take the property for the weekend and organise the day as they wish. Couples get exclusive access to style the property their own way, and there is accommodation on the property. The owners are open about being early in the venue's life and prefer couples to visit, see the space and talk through what is possible.
