A Stirling-based documentary photographer who starts early so the day eases into itself rather than beginning in a rush.
James Field works out of Stirling in the Adelaide Hills and has photographed more than 600 weddings. His pitch is down-to-earth photography that will not get in the way of you enjoying your day, with no set-piece posing and a focus on the organic in-between moments.
One practical difference he flags himself is timing. He starts earlier than most photographers, spending the morning with both parties so the day settles before the formal run sheet begins. His reasoning is that good photographs depend on the mood in the room, and that mood cannot be manufactured by a photographer who arrives at the last minute with cameras blazing.
He is candid that what he now finds most rewarding is not the images themselves but being a calming presence: reducing stress and increasing the amount of fun a couple actually has. The feedback he singles out comes from couples who dreaded being photographed and were surprised to enjoy it.
His blog carries dozens of complete wedding stories rather than highlight reels, shot at venues including Marybank Estate, White Hill Estate and Mt Beare Station, several of which appear in our own South Australian venue directory. Away from weddings he lives on a bush block in the Hills with rescue greyhounds, volunteers on bush regeneration with groups such as Bush for Life, and offers free pet bereavement photography to people about to lose a companion animal.
