Simona Janek is a makeup artist and hairstylist with more than 20 years of experience, working from her own studio in Leichhardt in Sydney's Inner West. After years in fashion and beauty she also picked up a camera, and today her studio combines hair, makeup and portrait photography. Weddings remain a big part of her work: she offers wedding hair and makeup for brides and bridal parties, and says being part of a couple's big day is an absolute privilege.
Brides start with a hair and makeup trial at the Leichhardt studio, where there is free parking out front. Simona asks brides to bring photos of looks they like and a picture of the dress, and she aims for makeup that enhances rather than masks, so the skin looks fresh. On the day she plans the timing around the photographer's arrival, allowing about 30 minutes per person for makeup and 30 to 40 minutes for hair.
Simona travels all over Sydney, the Southern Highlands and the Hunter Valley, and flies to international destinations for weddings. She works together with a professional hairdresser, so large bridal parties and early ceremonies are easily covered. As well as the bride, she does hair and makeup for bridesmaids, junior bridesmaids, flower girls and the mothers of the bride and groom.
