Married By Leah is the celebrant business of Leah Appleby, a Sydney marriage celebrant and MC who lists Port Hacking and Sans Souci at the top of her service area. Before celebrancy she spent years in TV production, telling other people's stories behind the scenes. A friend suggested she would make a great celebrant, and although public speaking was her biggest fear, she took it on and now describes the job as the best story she gets to tell.
Her ceremonies are built from a questionnaire and written from scratch, with no templates. Leah says the finished ceremony is delivered to couples about a month before the wedding so they can read and tweak it, and she rehearses it every day for a week beforehand. On the day she arrives an hour early, reads the room and adjusts the energy, whether that means landing a joke, pausing for emotion or working around a boat horn mid-vows.
Leah has married couples aged from 23 to 77, including same-sex couples, second marriages, interfaith and multicultural couples, and she happily weaves in cultural rituals such as handfasting, ring warming or breaking the glass. Her very first couple was two women, married legally just after marriage equality passed. She also offers legal-only ceremonies, elopements and micro weddings, and can act as your MC so one person sets the tone from the ceremony through to the dance floor.
She travels across Sydney and to Canberra, the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley, the South Coast and the Southern Highlands, with a travel fee only beyond 50km of home. Leah quotes everything upfront, including BDM registration, and is part of a network of celebrants who can step in if illness strikes. Outside weddings she works in content creation and digital marketing, and she met her own partner on a flight to the Gold Coast to marry a couple.
