Josh Withers is the full-time marriage celebrant behind Married by Josh, based in Ranelagh in Tasmania's Huon Valley, where he lives on two acres with his wife Britt and their three kids. He became an authorised celebrant in May 2009 while working in breakfast and talk radio, then chose weddings full time in 2013. Since then he has created more than 2,900 weddings and elopements across 24 countries.
His ceremonies are written from scratch for each couple, with no templates and no recycled paragraphs, and he delivers them without reading from a script. Radio taught him to read a room and speak naturally, and most of his ceremonies settle at around 18 minutes, long enough to say something meaningful and short enough to keep everyone present. Rather than retelling love stories, he focuses on why the marriage matters.
Couples get as many conversations as they need, over coffee in Hobart or by video call, with no unnecessary meetings or homework. Josh completes the Notice of Intended Marriage with them at least a month before the day and brings a professional audio setup of Electro-Voice speakers and Rode microphones, so guests hear clearly and videographers get clean sound. He is also licensed to officiate in the USA and Canada.
Although Tasmania is home, with weddings from Hobart and Launceston to Cradle Mountain and Bruny Island, Josh regularly travels to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Canberra and Europe. Together with Britt he also created The Elopement Collective for couples who want something intimate. His aim is to breathe each marriage to life in a way that feels real, honest and recognisably theirs.
