John Beck is a Yarra Valley and Melbourne marriage celebrant who spent 25 years as a wedding DJ before 2016 and now writes relaxed, fun and meaningful ceremonies.
John Beck describes himself as a high school dropout who somehow ended up with the power to marry people: bald, glasses, friendly, house-trained, reliable and organised, and not one to take himself too seriously. His first full-time job was at radio station 3KZ, and in the mid 1980s he started a mobile DJ business with two friends. He spent 25 years as a wedding DJ and MC before becoming a celebrant in 2016.
Those years behind the decks taught him storytelling, how to hold a room and how to keep a celebration flowing without the cringe. Most of his couples want something light-hearted, memorable and meaningful, with a few laughs and maybe a few tears, and he builds ceremonies to suit. He celebrates only one ceremony per day, meets couples several times to plan, and promises not to stop for selfies or take photos to promote his business.
His role covers far more than the words on the day. John handles the Notice of Intended Marriage and the legal side under the Marriage Act 1961, runs a rehearsal at the ceremony site about 7 to 10 days beforehand to plan layout, movement and sound, helps choose ceremony music and coordinates with the venue, photographer and videographer so everything is ready. He also writes and tells your love story as part of the ceremony.
John services Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges and the Mornington Peninsula. He has been married for over 25 years and shares his home with Darcy the Labrador and three cats, Stanley, Reggie and Poppy.
