Heidelberg Cakes is a gluten free bakery in Stepney, just east of the Adelaide CBD, baking wedding and celebration cakes on site since 1991, from simple buttercream tiers to custom designs with handmade sugar flowers.
Heidelberg Cakes has made celebration cakes and desserts for South Australians since 1991, and the whole bakery has been gluten free and coeliac friendly since 2020. Everything is baked on site at the Stepney bakery and showroom, just east of the Adelaide CBD. The site says the business had a bumpy ride in 2024 and is now back with new local owners, alongside long serving staff such as baker Kate, who has been there since 2003.
Wedding cakes are a big part of the work. The online store lists dozens of pre designed wedding cakes, from single tier textured buttercream to three tier iced and semi naked cakes finished with sugar flowers, gold leaf, vintage piping or fresh berries, and couples can request a custom design instead. Consultations and tastings run by appointment at the showroom, there are almost 30 flavour combinations, and the team recommends booking wedding cakes months ahead, especially for October to March dates.
Sugar artist Stella, with the bakery since 2013, works closely with Manager and Executive Chef James Schmidt on wedding cakes and custom designs, and has had winning entries in the Masters Cake Decorating section at the Royal Adelaide Show. Dairy free cakes are available on request, couples can supply their own fresh or silk flowers, and cakes can be delivered in a refrigerated van anywhere from Victor Harbor to the Barossa.
